Level A2
means “now”. You can add it to the middle of sentences to create a much more relaxed sentence:
  • Það er gott að heyra. – That’s good to hear.
  • Það er gott að heyra. – Well now, that’s good to hear.
It adds the same type of nonchalance as saying “Well ...” before a sentence.
Adding to a sentence is an easy trick that will immediately make you sound far more fluent than you are. It makes you sound relaxed, like you don’t care that much about what’s happening. It can be used in informal and formal contexts. You should try using it a little bit in each conversation you have. While it is possible to add to almost every single sentence you say, we do not recommend that as it will make it sound like you care too little about the conversation.
Please remember: Don’t emphasize the word – it should always be in an unstressed position. If you stress the word it sounds like you’re saying “now” instead of “well ...”. The entire sentence has to be pronounced nonchalantly.
