A special verb form known as boðháttur (imperative) 👮 is used to give orders. It looks like this:
- Komdu hingað. = Come here!
- Farðu út í búð. = Go to the store!
- Spilaðu eitthvað skemmtilegt fyrir okkur. = Play something fun for us.
- Gerðu þetta fyrir mig. = Do this for me.
- Krakkar, gerið þetta fyrir mig. = Kids, do this for me.
Ordering one person

To give orders to one person you need to make the word end in -ðu/-du/-tu. This -ðu/-du/-tu was originally the word þú that became merged with the word.
There are a few different patterns for this:
Verbs that don’t change and just end in -ðu
The simplest verbs don’t change at all and just add -ðu:
- talaðu, borðaðu, hoppaðu, elskaðu, sjáðu, bakaðu, lagaðu, pantaðu, aðstoðaðu, svaraðu,
Verbs that remove the “a”
Remove the -a ending and add a -ðu/-du/-tu
- segðu, farðu, sjáðu, færðu, rífðu,
- sýndu, komdu, geymdu, feldu
- brostu, hlauptu, kysstu, klipptu, læstu, ýttu
Irregular
- að ganga → gakktu! [walk!]
- að binda → bittu! [bind!]
- að standa → stattu! [stand!]
- að þegja → þegiðu! [be quiet!]
- að setja → settu!
- að skipta → skiptu!
Ordering multiple people

Giving orders to multiple people is much easier. See if you can see the pattern:

As you can see, the same form is used as in normal sentences (present second person plural) except the order is reversed.
You can drop the þið when giving orders. It doesn’t really matter if you use it or not, but it is more common to drop the þið.
Of course, irregularities do exist:

Note that, unlike English, orders are not perceived as rude or impolite in Icelandic as they are in English.
Giving orders to not do something
Negative orders are easier, you just start them with “do not” (ekki) and the rest is simple:
- Borðaðu grænmeti, ekki borða nammi.
- Ekki gera þetta!
